World War II Home Front Museum

For many visitors St. Simons Island is an oasis of tranquility and fun that provides the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. However, during World War II, this strategic location off the coast of Georgia played an important role, and visitors to the island can learn more about this pivotal piece of history by visiting the World War II Home Front Museum while they’re in town. Located at 4201 1st Street, the World War II Home Front Museum is operated by the Coastal Georgia Historical Society. Since 1965 this important society has dedicated itself to providing places where locals and visitors can congregate to both remember and celebrate the importance of this region’s coastal heritage.

The many galleries and exhibits within the World War II Home Front Museum are designed to reflect the experiences of not only St. Simons Island residents, but all Americans during this tumultuous time in history. The museum is built into the historic coast guard station which positions it in a place of significance in light of military history as well. Home front history truly comes to life at this interactive museum where kids and adults alike will find intriguing information, images, and artifacts that allow you to step back in time and understand a turning point in both American and world history. The museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm and Sundays from 1:30 pm until 5:00 pm. Admission is $12 for adults, $6 for children between the ages of 6 and 12 and a $2 discount is provided for military members with a valid ID.
