For many visitors St. Simons Island is an oasis of tranquility and fun that provides the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. However, during World War II, this strategic location off the coast of Georgia played an important role, and visitors to the island can learn more about this pivotal piece of history by visiting the World War II Home Front Museum while they’re in town. Located at 4201 1st Street, the World War II Home Front Museum is operated by the Coastal Georgia Historical Society. Since 1965 this important society has dedicated itself to providing places where locals and visitors can congregate to both remember and celebrate the importance of this region’s coastal heritage.

The many galleries and exhibits within the World War II Home Front Museum are designed to reflect the experiences of not only St. Simons Island residents, but all Americans during this tumultuous time in history. The museum is built into the historic coast guard station which positions it in a place of significance in light of military history as well. Home front history truly comes to life at this interactive museum where kids and adults alike will find intriguing information, images, and artifacts that allow you to step back in time and understand a turning point in both American and world history. The museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm and Sundays from 1:30 pm until 5:00 pm. Other Exciting Area Stops for Visitors to Enjoy

While the World War II Home Front Museum is sure to delight and inspire visitors to St. Simons Island, there are plenty of other options for fun in the area when you’re looking to expand on your itinerary. You don’t have to travel far from the museum to encounter one of the highlights of any trip to St. Simons Island. The St. Simons Island Lighthouse is an impressive and important maritime structure that has had a place on the island since the early 1800s. Today, the lighthouse still functions as a warning system to sailors, but is also open as a tourist attraction where guests can take pictures, admire the view or try their luck at climbing the 129 stairs up to the top. For guests who make it that far, they’ll be rewarded with sweeping ocean views and amazing panoramic vistas that are quite unlike any other. The museum that’s connected to the lighthouse also served as keeper quarters and today houses a collection of displays and exhibits that inform guests on the importance of the lighthouse over the course of time on St. Simons Island. Whether you’re looking for a scenic moment or can’t wait to get up close with history, stopping at the lighthouse is a must when you’re visiting St. Simons Island.

One of the best places to do exactly that is located just minutes from the World War II Homefront Museum and is referred to fondly as East Beach. This inviting stretch of sand is an idyllic place to settle in for the day and enjoy watching the waves roll in, work on that golden island tan or make the most of time snorkeling and swimming in the water. The surf in this area tends to be rather tranquil making it a great place to lounge and play no matter how many others you’re traveling to St. Simons Island with. Bring your lounger and umbrella and get ready for a day of fun under the sun when you head towards East Beach. Even better is the fact that for those that are in town with canine companions in tow, East Beach is a dog-friendly destination meaning you, your crew, and your four-legged friend can make the most of time on the sand together.
