From tales of crew from this station rescuing survivors of two American ships torpedoed by a German U-boat 13 miles off St. Simons Island to memories of local heroes serving abroad, the content touched on here is both regionally and internationally relevant. Interactive elements that include watching the skies for enemy aircraft and building a ship to transport supplies keep things engaging for visitors of all ages!
Also part of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society, the St. Simons Lighthouse and St. Simons Lighthouse Museum are worth a visit. While it is possible to simply admire this stark white structure from afar, exploring the interior of this complex provides another window into the area’s rich history. During the early 1900s before electricity and indoor plumbing, a lighthouse keeper and his family lived and worked here, keeping the light lit with kerosene oil. Visit the period rooms in the lighthouse keeper’s dwelling, where simple furnishings and antique toys seem as if nothing in the outside world has changed. The museum exhibits artifacts, historical photographs, and interactives that help visitors better understand the background of Coastal Georgia. Still working today, the St. Simons Lighthouse continues to guide mariners into the St. Simons Channel and Sound and stands as a treasured icon along St. Simons’ coast.
